Friday Night Naturalist: Doc Anner and the Environment At Trout Lake Nature Center

Oct 5, 2018

Carrie Sue Ayvar, storyteller and Chautauqua Scholar, portrays Dr. Anna Darrow

The daughter of immigrant farmers, Dr. Anna Darrow became the second female physician in Florida. She braved swampland, alligators, venomous snakes and dangerous outlaws to practice medicine in South Florida. Carrie Sue Ayvar, storyteller and Chautauqua Scholar, portrays Dr. Anna Darrow at Oct. 19 at 6 PM at the Trout Lake Nature Center, 520 East CR 44, Eustis.

Raised in the north, Dr. Darrow moved to Florida with her husband Charles Roy Darrow in 1911, eventually moving to Okeechobee, the wildest settlement east of the Mississippi. An accomplished artist, Doc Anner, as she was affectionately nicknamed by her patients, believed the study of art helped her work as a physician. As a wife, mother, physician, pharmacist, and even veterinarian Darrow followed her dreams and found beauty, friendship and adventures in Florida.

Doc Anner, who retired in 1949 and since died, was often asked to tell about her adventures in Florida and its wild areas. Now Ayvar brings her story to us.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities that TLNC recently received. Through this grant, lesson plans for students learning about Florida history was developed and provided to local schools.

Adults and students are encouraged to attend to learn about both Florida history and environment. This program is part of the Friday Night Naturalist series and is free to attend but a $5 donation is suggested to support future programs.
